If you are a student of medicine, nursing, health, and social care, then this revised edition is an invaluable learning resource for you. Introduction to Health Psychology, fifth edition, is a must-read, widely praised textbook that provides the learning resources you need from theory and research to real-world examples, helping you develop a better understanding and critical thinking on the issues explored. This revision provides a comprehensive guide on essential topics surrounding health, retaining its popular original structure of three multi-chaptered sections: 'Being and Staying Healthy', 'Becoming Ill', and 'Being Ill'. It also includes the useful final section, 'From Theory to Practice', which studies the need for theory-driven practice applications, making the most of the evidence available to support their study. The edition offers you an insightful overview on a range of topics on health behaviour, from health-risk to health-protective habits, before exploring applications and health care intervention practices. It also discusses biological and psychobiological models and theories and the impact of stress on health, illness, and its progression, with extensive references on healthy diet and exercise. The text also considers the role of key epidemiological updates and global health issues, cultural influences on health and health behaviour, and issues about health differentials, as seen in the illness experience. Each chapter opens with a current real-world example and places the topic into context by introducing the outline and learning outcomes. Along with the increased use of case studies, its useful Glossary and list of Further Reading, the content will offer food for individual reflection and group discussion, helping you fully engage with this applied area of psychology - an approach praised by lecturers and students alike!

Each disorder is considered from a psychological, social and biological perspective and different intervention types are thoroughly investigated. Key updates to this edition include: *The development of case formulations for conditions within each chapter *An articulation and use of modern theories of psychopathology, including sections on the transdiagnostic approach, meta-cognitive therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy *An introduction to emerging mental health issues, such as internet gaming disorder *Challenging 'stop and think' boxes that encourage readers to address topical issues raised in each chapter, such as societal responses to topics as varied as psychopathy, paedophilia and the Black Lives Matter movement *New vocabulary collated into key terms boxes for easy reference Paul Bennett is Professor of Clinical and Health Psychology at the University of Swansea. He has previously worked as a clinical psychologist, as well as an academic at Cardiff and Bristol universities. He has published over 125 academic papers, in addition to a number of highly regarded student-focused books Praise for the previous edition: "This book provided an invaluable orientation to the grounding theoretical principles of clinical health psychology, how this knowledge can be applied by psychologists in healthcare settings, particular assessment and intervention approaches and issues associated with working with patients in healthcare settings ... I would highly recommend this as a key text for clinical psychology trainees and postgraduates working or researching in medical settings across the lifespan, both as a general orientation tool and a resource to refer to with reference to specific presenting issues. Fleur-Michelle Coiffait, Doctoral student, University of Edinburgh, UK"The tone of this volume is well pitched; it is written in clear English yet without being over-simplified. New vocabulary is collated into 'key terms' boxes for easy reference at the end of the chapter - a useful device for the new student. Also proffered at chapter end are 'For Discussion' boxes, encouraging the reader to critically assess and compare the contents of the chapter, along with useful suggestions for further reading. With a good level of detail without swamping the reader, this volume is an excellent introduction to students of abnormal psychology." Hayley Burgess, Psychology Graduate

Counselling for Heart Disease (Paperback): Paul Bennett Counselling for Heart Disease (Paperback)
Paul Bennett
R1,102 Discovery Miles 11 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Coronary Heath Disease reminds the leading cause of premature death in most western countries, accounting, in the UK, for 40 percent of deaths in men and 10 percent of deaths in women, aged between 45 and 64 years. The psychological and social impact of heart disease can have adverse effects on the individual, the family and the disease itself, whilst a heart attack might involve not only an immediate threat to life, but also loss of a sense of control.

This book provides a practical framework for supporting and helping the patient and the family both in the acute medical setting and in the longer term in the community. It focuses on skills and techniques needed to provide important information, reduce stress and to set realistic goals during rehabilitation. The role of open communication between helper and patient is emphasized and demonstrated using examples and case studies.

This book has been written for all concerned with heart disease: professionals and lay helpers, clinicians and non-clinicians.

The Foreword is by Dr Alastair McDonald of the Cardiac Department, The Royal London Hospital, who also acted as medical advisor for the book.

Neural Approaches to Conversational Information Retrieval (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023): Jianfeng Gao, Chenyan Xiong, Paul Bennett,... Neural Approaches to Conversational Information Retrieval (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023)
Jianfeng Gao, Chenyan Xiong, Paul Bennett, Nick Craswell
R4,750 Discovery Miles 47 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book surveys recent advances in Conversational Information Retrieval (CIR), focusing on neural approaches that have been developed in the last few years. Progress in deep learning has brought tremendous improvements in natural language processing (NLP) and conversational AI, leading to a plethora of commercial conversational services that allow naturally spoken and typed interaction, increasing the need for more human-centric interactions in IR. The book contains nine chapters. Chapter 1 motivates the research of CIR by reviewing the studies on how people search and subsequently defines a CIR system and a reference architecture which is described in detail in the rest of the book. Chapter 2 provides a detailed discussion of techniques for evaluating a CIR system – a goal-oriented conversational AI system with a human in the loop. Then Chapters 3 to 7 describe the algorithms and methods for developing the main CIR modules (or sub-systems). In Chapter 3, conversational document search is discussed, which can be viewed as a sub-system of the CIR system. Chapter 4 is about algorithms and methods for query-focused multi-document summarization. Chapter 5 describes various neural models for conversational machine comprehension, which generate a direct answer to a user query based on retrieved query-relevant documents, while Chapter 6 details neural approaches to conversational question answering over knowledge bases, which is fundamental to the knowledge base search module of a CIR system. Chapter 7 elaborates various techniques and models that aim to equip a CIR system with the capability of proactively leading a human-machine conversation. Chapter 8 reviews a variety of commercial systems for CIR and related tasks. It first presents an overview of research platforms and toolkits which enable scientists and practitioners to build conversational experiences, and continues with historical highlights and recent trends in a range of application areas. Chapter 9 eventually concludes the book with a brief discussion of research trends and areas for future work. The primary target audience of the book are the IR and NLP research communities. However, audiences with another background, such as machine learning or human-computer interaction, will also find it an accessible introduction to CIR.

Rise of the Legal COO - Second Edition (Paperback, 2nd New edition): Katerina Menhennet Rise of the Legal COO - Second Edition (Paperback, 2nd New edition)
Katerina Menhennet; Chris Bull, Laura McNair, Stephen Allen, Mark J Masson, …
R7,106 Discovery Miles 71 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the five years since the first edition of this book published, there has been an accelerated rise in the number and influence of COO roles in the legal sphere. No longer the preserve of the largest national and international firms, mid-tier firms and even New Law and alternative legal service providers are considering a COO as a potential - perhaps even essential - component of law firm management, to achieve increased efficiency, productivity, and meet the demands of a highly competitive market. With contributions from a number of current law firm COOs, alongside some of the most respected and sought-after consultants working in this space, this second edition of Rise of the Legal COO examines the scope and variety of the legal COO role, and how the challenges and demands of the position have altered as law firms have evolved. It contains updated chapters from the first edition, and several brand new chapters covering topics such as: How the COO can enable innovation and digital transformation in their firm; The COO's role in managing profitability and client engagement; The use of data in law firm management; and The New Law COO. There are also all-new, exclusive interviews with legal COOs from a variety of national and international firms, covering topics ranging from the importance of relationships and adapting to the new hybrid, post-COVID world, to encouraging innovation in firms and strategies to recruit and retain talent. There is no doubt that a good COO is an invaluable part of a firm's management team, and the opportunities for talented individuals with broad operational management skills will continue to grow. Heavily backed up by the first-hand experience of the contributors, this title provides essential guidance to the current and future legal COO on the skills and strategies they need to succeed, and to law firms on how to recruit, integrate, and develop a COO who will be a good match for their culture and help them achieve their ambitions.

Highstead, near Chislet, Kent (Hardcover): Paul Bennett Highstead, near Chislet, Kent (Hardcover)
Paul Bennett
R855 R801 Discovery Miles 8 010 Save R54 (6%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the Foreword, Barry Cunliffe writes: "The publication of the excavation of the multi-period settlement site at Highstead near Chislet is a matter for celebration. Highstead, with its long sequence of occupation spanning the first millennium B.C. and early first millennium A.D., was excavated under difficult conditions between 1975 and 1977 in those pioneering days when rescue archaeology was in its infancy. It is a story well told by Paul Bennett in his preface and is a stark reminder of how hand-to-mouth archaeology was in the era before developer-funding. What the small dedicated team managed to recover during the course of those three punishing years was little short of remarkable. More remarkable still has been the dogged determination of the Canterbury Archaeological Trust to see the project through to the completion of full academic publication." The value of Highstead is two-fold. It is a type-site for Late Bronze Age and Iron Age settlement in eastern Britain and it provides a pottery sequence without parallel in the region which demonstrates not only the longue duree development of ceramic technology throughout the first millennium but also the mobility of ideas and of course people between the Continent and Britain. It is no exaggeration to say that Highstead calls for a complete reassessment of connectivity in the ChannelNorth Sea zone. Paul Bennett, in his preface, says that this report is unashamedly old fashioned. If by this he means it is designed to be used rather than to impress, he is right. There is an unfortunate tendency these days to produce either superficial, colourful accounts bereft of necessary detail or tortured constructions muddling interpretation with observation. The Highstead report is crisp, well structured and a delight to use. The facts are logically presented and easy of access, and there follows a splendid interpretative essay succinctly placing the site in its national and international context. What more could one want?

Introduction To Clinical Health Psychology (Paperback, Ed): Paul Bennett Introduction To Clinical Health Psychology (Paperback, Ed)
Paul Bennett
R1,012 Discovery Miles 10 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

* What is the role of psychology and psychological interventions in treating people with physical health problems? * Which factors contribute to the development of disease and its prevention? * How do people cope with and manage illness and how may these processes be influenced at both the individual and societal levels? * How can we highlight the comparative effectiveness of clinical interventions? This authoritative textbook is designed for use by final year undergraduates, those engaged in training for both clinical and health psychology, and practitioners. It is the first European text to combine elements of both clinical and health psychology in one volume. The book has five key themes: the causes of health and illness; psychological factors influencing the understandings of health, illness and health-related behaviour choice; the theory and application of psychological principles in facilitating individual behavioural and emotional change; the role of psychologists within the wider hospital system; and the role of psychology in population-based health promotion. Introduction to Clinical Health Psychology integrates psychological theory with the practice of health and clinical psychology in the hospital and in the broader context of health care. It considers both clinical interventions and those of a non-clinical nature that also impact on patients and health-care workers. In doing so, it addresses the developing curriculum for health psychologists' professional training as well as the more established role of clinical psychologists. It will provide essential reading in an increasingly significant and expanding field.

Clinical Psychology: Psychopathology through the Lifespan (Paperback, Ed): Paul Bennett Clinical Psychology: Psychopathology through the Lifespan (Paperback, Ed)
Paul Bennett
R1,272 Discovery Miles 12 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This innovative textbook adopts a lifespan approach to mental health. Paul Bennett provides an overview of factors that influence risk for mental health problems throughout the life course and emphasises lifelong models of mental health and disorders. In addition, he describes the nature and treatment of disorders specific to childhood, adulthood, and older adulthood. Adopting a transdiagnostic approach, Clinical Psychology Through the Lifespan explores commonalities in the origins and processes associated with a range of disorders, as well as their unique features. Although the DSM 5 diagnostic criteria for each of the disorders are outlined in an appendix, a key emphasis of the book is its clinical psychology perspective. This is highlighted by text boxes within each chapter which focus on therapeutic case formulation and specific therapeutic process or challenges.Written for undergraduate and Master's level psychology students studying mental health, it will be of interest to students from a range of other disciplines including nursing, medicine, and allied health. Paul Bennett is a professor in the School of Psychology at the University of Swansea, UK. He previously taught psychology at Cardiff and Bristol Universities and worked as a clinical psychologist for the NHS.
